| On the very morning of Cora's spay appointment, we awoke and at first were very concerned because we couldn't find her. She wasn't in her little shelter, and didn't come running to the gate like usual. We heard tiny squeaking noises coming from under a big oak tree and thought some baby birds had fallen from their nest. Cora was huddled under the tree as well, and as we got closer we heard her low rumbling growl. Eleven tiny newborn pups were lying beside Cora. She had been so emaciated and thin we had not even known that she was expecting! As we were able to carefully and gently coax Cora to allow us close enough, we saw that 4 of the puppies were quite still and not squirming and squealing like the others. Their little bodies were too starved and weak to survive and they never even made it into the world. Four little spotted boys. Cora trusted us to move the rest of the pups to a clean, warm place where she could nurse them and watch over them. Another little red girl pup didn't survive the second day and joined her brothers over the rainbow bridge. The other six little girls had inherited Cora's strong will and determination to survive against all odds. |
